Origin of the Waist Bead
Beads were used in Africa as a form of currency for trading. Many tribes in Africa have been known to have embraced the use of beads in jewelry making especially the Maasai tribe in Kenya and Yoruba in Nigeria. This art later was adopted by other neighboring countries like Ghana. To date, Ghana has arguably upheld the tradition of beaded jewelry making, mostly waist beads which are worn around the lower part of the body. Referred to as ‘Jigida’ by the Hausa tribe of Ghana, the name has been adopted by other tribes to refer to waist beads.
Purposes of Wearing Waist Beads
Sexual Attraction – Waist beads have also been worn by most African women for intimate appeal and male seduction. As a symbol of femininity and sensuality, only the partner a woman chooses would have the honor of seeing them fully. Women would lure suitable mates by rattling the beads, provoking intimacy.
Weight Control – As a weight gauge; when gaining weight, the beads climb up and when you lose weight, they fall elegantly on the hips. Wearing several strand of waist beads, also known as “layering” would achieve great results in body shaping around the mid-section.
Decoration – Modern day women adorn their bodies with Waist Beads as body accessories, wearing with low-rise jeans, crop-tops and bathing suits. They are colorful, shiny and attractive just like any other modern accessory like a watch, earring or necklace. They’re very feminine and a way to symbolize and celebrate feminism and beauty.
Spiritual Protection – Healing of rejuvenation qualities; depending on the ailment or what needs to be enhanced i.e. love, balancing, positive energy; various semi-precious stones and crystals can be included in the design of your waist beads.
Fertility– Traditionally believed to enhance fertility. It could be because the sexual attractiveness of the beads increases the rate of sexual intercourse between couples.
Symbol of Love – Traditionally as a sign a young woman has reached marriageable age and could now have suitors and to show that a woman was still pure as at the time of marriage. Waist beads are given to women as a token of love from a suitor, future husband.
